How it works

1. Choose the lesson

Decodability is not a property of a text on its own; it depends on what the reader has been taught. You pick the lesson, and Cody knows every letter-sound pattern introduced up to that point, plus the high-frequency words taught by then.

2. Name a topic

A dog at the park, a robot friend, a snow day. The topic is what makes a child want to read the story; the lesson is what makes it possible for them to.

3. Get a story that has already been checked

Each word in the finished story is looked up in a dictionary of more than 180,000 entries with its spelling patterns mapped. Cody will not hand a teacher a story below 90% decodable for the chosen lesson.

Already have a story? Check it.

The scorer Cody holds its own stories to is free to use on any passage, including one a chat assistant wrote. Paste it in, pick the lesson, and see which words a reader cannot yet decode.

Questions

Is the decodable story generator really free?

Yes. The Free forever plan costs $0, has no time limit and does not ask for a credit card. It includes 3 decodable stories per week. Paid plans add unlimited stories, worksheets, word lists and Reader's Theater; see the pricing page for what each one includes.

Do I need an account to try it?

Not for your first story. The generator on this page writes one story without an account, so you can judge the result before deciding anything. A free account is what gives you the 3 stories a week.

What makes a story decodable?

A story is decodable when a reader can sound out every word using only the letter-sound patterns they have already been taught. That depends on the lesson, not on the text alone: a story that is decodable at lesson 40 is full of words a lesson 10 reader has to guess. Cody writes each story for a chosen lesson and checks it against that lesson's rules.

How is this different from asking ChatGPT for a decodable story?

A general assistant does not know which lesson your student is on, so it writes short, simple sentences that still reach for patterns the student has not met. Cody starts from the lesson, then scores the finished story with the same scorer you can use yourself on the decodability checker. You can paste a chat assistant's story into the checker and see the words that wandered off.

How decodable is a Cody story?

Cody will not hand a teacher a story below 90% decodable for the chosen lesson. That is the top of the 80 to 90 percent range that research on decodable text typically cites.

Which phonics program does it follow?

The generator on this page follows a UFLI-inspired scope and sequence. The help center lists the curricula Cody supports, and each phonics skill has its own page in the skills library.
