Vowels
Schwa
Schwa is the flat uh sound an unstressed vowel collapses into: the a in about, the o in lemon, the e in taken. Any vowel letter can make it, which is why it is the single largest source of spelling errors in English.
Reading past a schwa is easy; spelling one is not, because the sound gives no clue which letter to write. Pronouncing the word by its spelling, as lem-on, is the usual way in.

Common questions
What is a schwa sound?
The unstressed uh sound in a longer word, like the first vowel in about or the last in lemon. Any vowel letter can spell it.
Make a decodable story for this skill
Cody generates stories, word lists and worksheets constrained to the patterns a student has already been taught, so practice on schwa does not smuggle in something they have not met yet.
