Suffix spelling rules
Adding a suffix often changes the base word: “hop” becomes “hopping”, “hope” becomes “hoping”, “happy” becomes “happier”. Three rules cover most of it, doubling the final consonant, dropping the silent e, and changing y to i.
These are spelling rules that pay back in reading too. A reader who knows hopping comes from hop is not confused by the double p.
